On December 27, Coach Dave Doemel ’71 was honored for his 300 wins in a pre-game ceremony prior to the varsity basketball game against LaSalle Institute during the 8th Annual Alumni Basketball Tournament. Coach Doemel attained an impressive record of 300 wins in his 20-year varsity basketball coaching career at CBA. That evening, the Ned McGraw Gymnasium was packed with family, former players, colleagues, and friends, all there to show their support for Coach Doemel. Dr. James Schlegel, Head of School and Blaine Drescher ’04, Director of Athletics spoke of Coach and presented him with a custom basketball. After the game, the entire CBA community was invited into the cafeteria for a reception.

The Brothers added another win to Coach’s record that night with a 53-37 win over LaSalle. Congratulations Coach Doemel!

Coach Dave Doemel Sr. ’71

During his high school years at CBA, he played football, basketball, and baseball and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was a member of two Diocesan Championship Football and Basketball teams and participated as a three-year varsity baseball player.

Upon graduation in 1971, Dave attended the University of Notre Dame where he received his degree in Government and International Relations. He also played baseball and earned his letter for his play during his senior year.

In 1975, Dave returned to CBA to teach Social Studies and English and serve as the coach of the modified football team. In 1981, he was named freshman basketball coach. As a freshman coach, Dave compiled a 72-16 record and the ’84 -’85 team won the Big Ten Championship. In 1986, he was elevated to the JV coaching position. Again he was blessed with some great players and his teams compiled a 140-56 record with the ’88 -’89, ’90 -’91, and ’94 -’95 teams garnering the Big Ten Championships. In 1997, Dave was proud to be named as the varsity basketball coach. During his tenure, CBA has captured six Big Ten Championships and seven Section 2 Class AA titles, winning 4 straight sectional titles from ’08 -’09 through ’11 -’12. Their run established CBA as the only Class AA team in Section 2 to accomplish this feat. Coach Doemel’s squads have appeared in 3 New York State Final Fours culminating with a State Championship in 2009-10. In that year, he was selected as New York State Coach of the Year by the Basketball Coaches Association of NY State as a result of the team’s successes.
